District officials have been in regular contact with the Okaloosa County Director of Public Safety, Patrick Maddox, tracking Tropical Storm Francine. Francine is likely to become a hurricane today. Landfall is expected Wednesday evening along the central Louisiana coast. Okaloosa is unlikely to receive sustained tropical storm force winds on the current forecast track. Winds in the 10-15MPH range with gusts to 30MPH would be possible Wednesday afternoon/evening through Thursday with 2-4” of rain and up to 6 “ of rain in some areas. The southern half of the county is expected to have a “slight” risk for severe weather and there is a tornado threat, as with many thunderstorms in our area this time of year, late Wednesday, overnight into Thursday.

Based on the information received this afternoon from Director Maddox, and keeping student safety as our priority, schools are anticipated to remain open. The School District will continue to work with the county’s emergency operations center to monitor the impact of Tropical Storm Francine. We will provide updates as needed.
