Ribando Compositions Performed in Virginia, New York City
Dr. Jeremy Ribando, chair of the Humanities, Fine & Performing Arts Division and a music professor at Northwest Florida State College, had his composition iFlight performed by the Hampton Roads Philharmonic at the American Theatre in Hampton, Va., on Oct. 18-19.
The work originally premiered in 2012 with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra as the orchestra's 25th anniversary theme and was later performed and designated to celebrate the opening of NWF State College's 50th anniversary year. iFlight is characterized as a piece full of motion -- music that celebrates the orchestra as an iconic cultural force, full of energy, vitality and continued influence, even in today's digital age.
Additionally, Ribando has a new composition for soprano and flute set to premiere in New York City on Nov. 23 as part of the "Composer's Voice" concert series. The work Finishing Class features text from a poem by NWF State College English professor Dr. Deidre Price, an author and the editor of the college's literary journal, Blackwater Review. The "Composer's Voice" series features contemporary composers in chamber concerts held twice a month at Jan Hus Church in New York City. Concerts are recorded and help promote new music, performers and composers.
An award-winning composer, Ribando's choral compositions have been performed and recorded by high school, church and university choirs, and his instrumental compositions have been premiered by members of the Grand Rapids Symphony, Lansing Symphony and Dayton Symphony, among others. He has also received commissions/performances from numerous universities and orchestras and has been recognized with awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), Yamaha, the Boeing Corporation and the Michigan Arts Council.
In addition to composing and teaching voice, music theory and music technology, Ribando is also an accomplished vocalist who has performed professionally since age 16 in a variety of notable roles and venues.
