Shakespeare's Psychological Thriller 'Hamlet' on Stage March 18-21

The story of "Hamlet," probably one of the best known stories in the English language, will be presented March 18 to 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sprint Theater of the Mattie Kelly Fine & Performing Arts Center on the Niceville campus of Northwest Florida State College. Tickets are now on sale for $15 each for adults and $10 each for youth age 18 and younger. Contact the Mattie Kelly Arts Center Box Office at 729-6000 or purchase online.

The play, presented by the college's Fine & Performing Arts Division, will feature a talented cast of regional actors, custom-designed period costumes, and a set built specifically for the Sprint Theater, the smaller of two theater venues at the college's arts complex.

In addition to the March 18-21 public performance nights, NWF State College students may attend dress rehearsals March 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. free of charge by showing a college student ID at the door. NWF students may also request one free ticket per student ID for March 18-21 performance nights, on a space-available basis, by contacting the box office in-person.

Many Shakespearean scholars consider "Hamlet" as the first purely psychological thriller. NWF State College theater professor Clint Mahle, who will direct the show, holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Staging Shakespeare from the University of Exeter in Britain and also studied with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and the London Globe Theatre. Mahle noted that the acting style of the college's production of "Hamlet" will be in keeping with modern tastes, but the play will feature theatrical conventions of Shakespeare's time such as minimal scenery, talking to the audience, and quick flow of entrances and exits in an attempt to give the audience a feel for how Shakespeare's theatre company might have performed the work.

The cast for "Hamlet" includes:
